Why I love Love and Let Lie (forever a work in progress) (SPOILERS)
i. seon taeyoung
first of all, the reason why I fell in love with the first place: seon taeyoung.
even though this story is really about minjae, and taeyoung is more of a concept, I still love him and regard him as one of my most favorite fictional characters (and my favorite BL character of all time by a long shot). the reason why is because I love how strong he is.
from the beginning, he was always calling minjae's bluffs, he rarely hesitates, and I think he can do what most people cannot. Some may see naivety, or stupidity (especially minjae 🤣) because he stays by minjae even after all the bullshit minjae puts him through. even when faced with situations where he's scared for himself, where he believes there's nothing he can do (like when minjae was drugged), he knows minjae wants and needs someone to be by his side. no matter how hard it is, taeyoung will do what he can for minjae.
I love how he just understands minjae without him having to say anything. He said it already, that all of minjae's negative words are lies, minjae will keep pushing taeyoung away because he doesn't believe taeyoung can stay in his life. But taeyoung doesn't just stay, he will go out and find minjae every time if he has to. it takes so much immense strength to provide unconditional love, especially to someone who has toxic behaviors and is still healing, and for this reason I find him so comforting and inspiring, because I don't know if I could act the same in these situations.
his naivete is also something that is needed for the series - an outsider who can challenge the status quo and a mindset that isn't tainted like the other characters. in a "world" in which it is natural for minjae to be regarded as someone dirty and disgusting, taeyoung (who has seen both his beautiful sides and also him at his lowest) cannot understand why the world must treat him so unfairly. He feels this way about minjae, even before he knows minjae's past. In the beginning, taeyoung began to feel this way and make assumptions about him, but he realizes that it's wrong to do so.
He remains emotionally intelligent and doesn't respond to minjae's provocations, but instead holds onto his beliefs and isn't afraid to be honest when he has to be. He knows he hasn't done anything he should be ashamed of, like he already said, so even though he's quite awkward at times, he can still express how he feels easily in intense situations. He also knows when to hold himself back after he asked minjae if he's ever tried to kill anyone - though he was just trying to understand him, he matured after that and knew how to own up and apologize, and takes greater care when asking things of minjae after.
I also love how taeyoung does not judge minjae. no matter what minjae does or whatever situation they find themselves in, he seeks to understand rather than cast minjae aside and act like he is beyond help or care. When taeyoung found minjae in the bathtub, he doesn't reprimand minjae and reassures him the day after that he wants to help minjae. When minjae tried to have sex with him after having had sex with someone else, taeyoung reassures minjae again that he's there to help minjae. And repeatedly there were several situations in which taeyoung should have been shocked or judgmental, but taeyoung ignores everything else and only focuses on what he knows to be true, what's in front of him.
Another wonderful aspect of taeyoung is that he is so respectful to everyone when speaking, but also in his mannerisms as well when it comes to physicality. He is gentle and never pushy with his physical touch with minjae, even before he knows of minjae's past. Despite everything he has seen and heard, taeyoung has never used minjae's promiscuity as an excuse to do something untoward to him, and knows that consent is important. He is never aggressive during the act, and is always focused on how minjae is reacting and trying to protect him from getting hurt. Even outside of sex, taeyoung waited for minjae to ask to hug him.
